Why not to use Olive Oil for high heat cooking..
There are a lot of good reasons to use olive oil or other such good fats for cooking. But do we know how to use them safely when we do cook?
There is a lot more to cooking with oil that just selecting your favorite oil and using it for everything.
Olive oil is one of those things that you know are great for your health and diet but may be unsure of how to use. Well apart from in dressings or as some sort of cure for anything from Baldness to Skincare, you can also cook with it.
You need to be careful when cooking with olive oil or indeed any oil, as too high a temperature will damage the oil and cause it to be potentially harmful to your health.
The problem with cooking with something like olive oil is that olive oil is easily oxidised, has a low smoking point and becomes very unpleasant for the body very quickly.
Here I have compiled a selection of videos to show which oils are the best to use, the temperatures that are best suited to cooking with oil and finish with some general tips on how to cook with different oils.
The final video will show you how to read the label to see what you are likely to be getting in terms of olive oil quality.
If you only take one thing from this post then it should be this:
Cooking with oil, beyond its smoking point, will not only potentially spoil the taste of your food but will change the structure of the oil used and make it bad for your health, if not downright dangerous to consume. Unrefined oils tend to have a lower smoking point than refined oils.
